Terms of service
Plain-language summary first; the numbered terms are the agreement. Provider: Lathe.
In short
- You rent a dedicated virtual machine running the data engines you choose (Postgres, Redis, CouchDB and NATS), managed by us, billed monthly in USD in advance.
- Mini starts with a 3-day free trial: your card is verified, nothing is charged, and the first month is charged when the trial ends unless you deleted the instance. Other plans are charged when created. One trial per person.
- Backups are daily disk images kept for 7 days. The recovery point is up to 24 hours. There is no high-availability and no uptime guarantee.
- Cancel any time from the console; the instance is deleted and a final snapshot kept 7 days.
- If a payment fails we retry for 7 days, then block connections, and delete the instance after 21 days.
- We never look at your data except to fix a problem you asked us to fix or as required by law.
1. Service
Lathe ("we") provides managed database instances running Postgres 17, Redis 8, CouchDB 3 and NATS 2 ("the service") as described on the website. Each instance runs on its own virtual machine in a European datacenter operated by our hosting subprocessor. You receive database credentials, not administrative access to the machine.
2. Account
You must provide a valid email address, your name and billing details (they appear on your receipts), and a payment card. You are responsible for anything done with your credentials, including connection strings you share with third parties. New accounts may run one instance until their first monthly renewal succeeds.
3. Fees and billing
Prices are listed in USD per instance per 30-day period and charged in advance to the card on file. Tier upgrades are charged pro rata for the remainder of the current period. An instance on Mini begins with a 3-day free trial: the card is verified (a temporary authorisation that is released) and the first period is charged when the trial ends, unless the instance was deleted before then. One trial per person, whichever account or card is used. Upgrading during the trial charges the new plan's first period at once and ends the trial. If a trial's first charge fails, connections are blocked at once and the instance is deleted after 7 days unless a payment succeeds. Payments are not refunded except where consumer law requires it. Failed charges are retried after 1, 3 and 7 days; after 7 days connections are blocked; after 21 days the instance is deleted. Prices may change with 30 days' notice by email. Taxes are added where the law requires. Each instance includes 20 TB of outbound traffic per month and inbound traffic is free; traffic is never billed. Sustained use beyond that may lead us to contact you about a suitable arrangement — never to a surprise charge.
4. Backups and data
We take a daily image of each instance's disk and keep the last 7. You can restore any of them from the console. Before any destructive action we initiate (restore, reset, deletion) we take a snapshot and keep it 7 days. The recovery point objective is up to 24 hours; data written after the last image may be lost if the machine fails. You are responsible for additional backups if you need a shorter recovery point.
5. Availability
The service is provided without an uptime guarantee. Each instance is a single machine; if it stops responding we restart it automatically once. Planned maintenance — engine minor versions and operating-system security updates — happens in a fixed weekly window (Sundays 03:00 UTC), is announced by email in advance and takes a few minutes. Plan upgrades cause a few minutes of downtime that you schedule. Support is by email at support@lathe.computer, answered within 24 hours on business days; there is no telephone support and no separate service-level agreement.
6. Acceptable use
You may not use the service to store or process content that is illegal where you or we operate, to attack other systems, to mine cryptocurrency, or in a way that degrades the hosting platform. We may suspend an instance immediately if the hosting subprocessor reports abuse, and we will tell you why.
7. Your data and confidentiality
Your data stays yours. We do not access database contents except to resolve a support request you made, to investigate abuse reports, or when legally compelled. Personal data is processed under the Data Processing Agreement.
8. Termination
You can delete an instance at any time; billing stops at the end of the paid period and no refund is made for the remainder. We may terminate with 30 days' notice, or immediately for breach of section 6 or non-payment under section 3. On termination we keep a final snapshot for 7 days and then delete all data.
9. Liability
To the extent permitted by law, our total liability for any claim is limited to the fees you paid in the three months before the claim, and we are not liable for lost profits, lost data beyond the backup commitments above, or indirect damages. Nothing limits liability that cannot be limited by law.
10. Changes and law
We may update these terms with 30 days' notice by email; continued use after that is acceptance. These terms are governed by the laws of Israel and disputes are brought before the competent courts of Tel Aviv, unless mandatory consumer law where you live provides otherwise.
