Messaging and streams

Managed NATS 2 with JetStream, beside your database.

Lathe runs NATS 2 for you on a dedicated machine in the EU: pub/sub, request-reply and JetStream persistent streams over TLS with credentials, streams created and purged from the portal, the API or MCP, a memory budget out of the plan's RAM, and one flat monthly price with traffic included.

What you get with NATS 2 on Lathe.

TLS with credentials
NATS listens on port 4222 over TLS; clients authenticate with the instance's user and password.
JetStream on
Persistent streams with file storage on the machine's NVMe: create, purge and delete them from the instance page or the API.
Message size
The maximum payload is a setting, 8 MB by default, up to 64 MB.
Every client
Any NATS client library connects unchanged; there is no proprietary layer.
Monitoring
Connections, messages in and out and memory, with charts over an hour, a day or a week.
Backed up with the machine
Streams live on the instance's disk and are in the daily image.
Version and licence
NATS 2, the upstream build with no Lathe patches, under the Apache-2.0 licence. Minor updates in a fixed weekly window (Sundays 03:00 UTC), announced by email in advance.
On the same machine
Postgres, Redis, CouchDB and NATS can run together on one dedicated instance in the EU; switch any of them on or off later, each with its own memory budget and credentials.

Connect

tls://app:••••@db-7f3a.lathe.computer:4222

Good for

  • Queues and background work between services
  • Event streams with replay

Yes, with file storage on the instance's disk. Streams are managed from the portal, the REST API or the MCP server.

Is it a NATS cluster?

No. A single server on a dedicated machine. Clients reconnect on their own after a restart, which takes seconds.

How large can a message be?

8 MB by default; the limit is a setting you can raise to 64 MB.

Also on Lathe: Postgres 17, Redis 8, CouchDB 3. See pricing, or the home page for the whole offer.
